Fort Miles and U.S. Coastal Defense in World War II

Author Terrance McGovern will give a lecture explaining how Fort Miles fit into U.S. coastal defense during World War II on Saturday, Feb. 24. McGovern will review how changes in American seacoast fortifications and coast artillery led to the design and function of Fort Miles. The lecture will review earlier coastal defenses and how technology forced revisions, especially for defense of Delaware River and Bay. McGovern will explain the differences between Fort Miles and other WWII harbor defenses.

When: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024; Doors open at 10 a.m.

Where: Fort Miles Museum Media Room

About Terrance McGovern:
Terrance McGovern has written eight books and numerous articles on fortifications, four books for Osprey’s Fortress Series (“American Defenses of Corregidor and Manila Bay,1898-1945"; “Defenses of Pearl Harbor and Oahu, 1907-50"; “American Coastal Defenses,1885-1950"; “Defenses of Bermuda, 1612-1995"). He has published several books on coast defense and fortifications through Redoubt Press or CDSG Press. McGovern was chairman of the U.S.-based Coast Defense Study Group and continues to be a longtime officer. He edited the Fortress Study Group annual journal, FORT. He is a director of the International Fortress Council and the Council on America’s Military Past.
