The Nike/Zeus missile program was the answer to the question of how to defend the continent in the post World War II era. Fort Miles served as a radar post for costal missile defenses covering Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Professor Bright is an expert on continental defense in the Eisenhower era and will share with us how the Nike/Zeus program was developed and operated.

About the Speaker:Prof. Christopher Bright is a historian with specialties in twentieth-century U.S. foreign policy and politics. He is the author of Continental Defense in the Eisenhower Era (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010 and 2014) which discusses American preparations for a surprise Soviet bomber attack on the United States during the early Cold War.
Dr. Bright teaches about the historical antecedents of current U.S. foreign and defense policy at the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil in U.S. History from GW, an M.A. (Foreign Affairs) from the University of Virginia, and an A.B. from William & Mary.
